What is the DCMWC?

The mission of the Division of Coal Mine Workers’ Compensation, or Federal Black Lung Program, is to administer claims filed under the Black Lung Benefits Act.

The Act provides monthly monetary payments and medical benefits to coal miners who are totally disabled due to pneumoconiosis (black lung disease) arising from their employment in or around coal mines.

The DCMWC provides beneficiaries with prescription drugs, in-patient and out-patient services, and doctor visits.

In addition, home oxygen and other medical equipment, home nursing services, and pulmonary rehabilitation may be covered with a doctor’s prescription.

Medical treatment bills are monitored and subject to audit to ensure that the requested treatments are necessary and that payments are correct.

The DCMWC identifies and works with coal mine operators and insurers so that liability for payment of benefits is appropriately assigned.
