What illnesses are covered by EEOICPA?

The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA) was created to compensate workers who have become ill as a result of being exposed to radioactive materials during their employment with the Department of Energy (DOE). For purposes of the act, occupational illnesses are defined as those that are caused by beryllium illness, specified cancers engendered by radiation exposure, and Chronic silicosis.

The covered illnesses fall into the following categories:

• Cancers: All types of cancer, including leukemia, lung cancer, bone cancer, kidney cancer, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, esophagus cancer, and stomach cancer
• Beryllium diseases: Chronic beryllium disease, beryllium sensitivity, and occupational illnesses caused by toxic beryllium exposures
• Respiratory diseases: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and occupational asthma
• Neurological disorders: Parkinsonism
• Kidney disease: Kidney disease
• Other illnesses: Asbestos-related diseases, skin cancer, multiple myeloma, lymphomas, ovarian cancer, salivary gland cancer, small intestine cancer, pancreas cancer, bile ducts, gall bladder, urinary tract, colon, and rectal cancer
