How do I make a FECA claim?

To make a claim under the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act (FECA), you should follow the following steps:

  1. If you are hurt at work, it is imperative that you report your work-related injury or illness, regardless of the nature or severity, to your supervisor immediately.
  2. Identify the Type of Claim: Determine if your claim is for a traumatic injury (Form CA-1) or an occupational disease (Form CA-2). See HERE to determine the difference.
  3. Complete the Form: Fill out the appropriate form (CA-1 or CA-2) with all the necessary details.
  4. Submit Electronically: You can submit the forms electronically via the Employees’ Compensation Operations and Management Portal (ECOMP). To initiate a claim, you’ll need to register for an account on the ECOMP site.
  5. Attach Supporting Documents: If you’re submitting a CA-2 form, also review the CA-35 “Evidence Required in Support of a Claim for Occupational Disease” form/checklist and attach any required documentation.
  6. Keep Copies: Ensure you keep a copy of everything for your records.
  7. Agency’s Role: Your agency will complete its portion of the form and submit the entire packet to the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP) office.
  8. OWCP Review: The OWCP will review the information submitted and determine if there is sufficient information to adjudicate the claim. They will advise you of the claim number established and if additional information is needed.

Remember, there is a timeline for filing a claim. A claim for compensation must be filed within three years of the date of injury. However, suppose written notice of injury was given within 30 days, or the employer had actual knowledge of the injury within 30 days after it occurred. In that case, compensation may still be paid even if the claim is filed later.
